Twyla Malchow-Hay (she/they) is a fluid and queer movement artist, multidisciplinary creator, poet, bodyworker, and birthworker. She was raised in Portland, OR (Multnomah, Wasco, Cowlitz, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin, Kalapuya, Molalla land) amongst the rain and evergreens, and is currently rooting in Berkeley, CA (Huchiun, Lisjan Ohlone land). She has lived in the Bay Area since 2017 after graduating from Chapman University with a BFA in Dance Performance. From 2019-2022, Twyla studied with Holly Johnston as a part of Responsive Body’s founding cohort and became certified as a Responsive Body practitioner. In recent years, Twyla has fallen in love with the mystery of birth and became a birth and postpartum doula with Cornerstone Birthwork Training as well as gathering pregnancy release and prevention skills through the Womb Room. They are currently in massage school at the San Francisco School of Massage & Bodywork.
While in the Bay, Twyla has been actively evolving a multidisciplinary creative practice that blends movement, writing, collage, visual mediums, photography, sound design, and ritual. They’ve performed with Ky Frances, Cookie Harrist, Chani Bockwinkel, Ishan (Armineh Astanbous and Rachael Sharkland), Byb Chanel Bibene, Jessi Barber & Julie Crothers, Bouchra Ouizguen, Ido Tadmor, and on film for Madeline Kenney, Jess Bozzo, and others. Creatively, she's exploring her connection to the earth, spirit, dreams, sensation, and memory. They find great passion and pleasure in the healing depths of movement, writing practices, and magic.
Twyla feels strength in her sensitivity and sources power from her intuition. Through her years of navigating injuries and healing the experiences of being a survivor, she has grown curious and passionate about the potential of alchemizing pain into embodied aliveness. Following a call to serve the transitions and transformations of life's cycles, Twyla is building a practice that weaves together bodywork, birthwork, and creation. As a practitioner, Twyla aims to serve as a companion in the journey and cultivate nourishing spaces that support the wholeness of one's being; the lived experiences, the shadowy depths, and the vibrancy of all life.
